Lossy formats are also supposed to use less battery than lossless formats. Hard drives use more battery versus a flash mod. Since you didn't mention it, I assume you're using a physical hard drive instead of flash memory. That you're topping out at 6 hours makes me think this guy may have sold you an old battery he scavenged from a used iPod. I reckon you should be getting in that ballpark with a new replacement battery, at the very minimum. Reviews put the battery life closer to 12 hours for music, iirc. When new, Apple claimed the iPod Video had 14 hours of music playback for the thin (30gb) and 20 hours for the thick (60/80gb). We aren't talking about the bigger 2000+ mah "extended capacity" batteries that require modding. That is, batteries meant to directly replace the stock batteries in size and shape and I assume that's what you have. Replacement batteries range between 540-850 mah more or less. Keeping this here in case someone is in a similar situation! Thanks for your responses! I'm guessing the seller didn't bother with this and probably muddled it by interrupting the charge. Been in the red zone for the last couple of hours. From what you guys have said this is about right for this model. I’ve only really dealt with other iPods that have less battery time by default but it’s my understanding that even with high quality files I should be getting much more than that? Could it just be a bad battery or not powerful enough? I happen to have a spare battery coming I could try when it arrives.ĮDIT: After 3 rounds of battery calibration (letting the battery fully charge and letting the battery deplete until the iPod shuts down) I'm now getting 10 1/2 hours and counting. With 320kbps tracks going with no backlight, 30% volume, no EQ on shuffle I’m getting an average of about 6 hours of music before it dies. I’m assuming it’s just a basic 580 mAh (I can definitely open it up if necessary but was kinda hoping to not have to for a while). I bought one from a guy on marketplace who said he installed a brand new battery in it. What should I be expecting in terms of battery life with a 580 mAh battery inside a 5th Gen iPod Video?
